When Repair Stops Being Worth It
Resetting block over a failed base buys the same failure a second time. Three findings close the argument for us. Settlement shows up under most of the run. The face has turned on itself instead of simply tipping out. Nothing but clay sits behind the block. The cheapest wall on a lot like that is the one built once.
Tear-Out
Dry-stacked walls come apart by hand, unit by unit, sorted as they go. Good block goes on pallets. Broken block goes in the trailer. A machine pulls timber walls apart, face boards and buried anchors together. Poured and mortared walls get broken up and loaded out, footing included where the footing has moved.
One Bay or the Whole Line
A long run does not always have to come down together. Where one section moved and the rest stands straight on solid base, we rebuild that section and tie the new courses into the standing wall at both ends. Access, Permits, and Timing
Gate width and the drop to the wall pick the machine, and the machine moves the price. A wall reachable from a driveway costs less than the same wall behind a fenced back yard on a Kaw bluff lot. Is it possible to replace a retaining wall?
Yes, and it is everyday work for us. The old wall comes down from the cap course, the hill gets cut back far enough to work in, and a compacted gravel base goes in below finished grade. The new wall rises on that base with a stone column, a pipe run to daylight, and grid where the height calls for it. A normal residential run is finished inside a week.
Will I have to buy a whole new wall of block?
Rarely. Concrete units do not wear out, so anything not cracked or spalled goes back into the rebuild. Caps and cut pieces get replaced more often than field units, and we allow for breakage. The bill is machine time, excavation, base gravel, drainage stone, pipe, geogrid, and crew hours.
Do you replace poured concrete and mortared masonry walls?
We do. A split poured wall or a cracked mortared wall gets broken out and hauled away, and a settled footing goes with it. From there you either rebuild in kind with a fresh footing, weeps, and a drain designed in, or move the line to segmental block, which flexes as Kansas clay moves instead of cracking against it. Height, what sits above the wall, and what the ends tie into decide which route makes sense.
How rough does the yard get?
Rough for several days. A machine needs a route to the wall, so one strip of lawn gets driven on and plywood goes down where it protects turf. Excavated soil stacks close by and the surplus leaves on a trailer. Shrubs worth saving come out ahead of the tear-out and get heeled in. At the end we finish grade, seed or sod the torn strip, and wash down the hard surfaces.
