Auburn sits about twelve miles southwest of Topeka in Shawnee County. The Wakarusa River rises in Auburn Township, and the ground around town mixes rural edge with real grade. Lots run large out here. A wall on a large lot usually runs long, and a long wall almost never fails end to end.

Eastern Kansas clay decides how these walls behave. The clay takes on water in a wet spring and swells against the back of the wall. August dries it out, it shrinks away, and a void opens behind the block. Twice a year the load changes. The wall walks out a fraction each cycle, and winter freeze adds one more push on top of that.

So we build a stone column and a way out for the water. Clean angular drainage stone fills the space behind the units from the leveling pad to the cap. A perforated pipe sits at the base of that stone and runs on a fall to daylight past the end of the wall. On the taller runs we lay Tensar UX geogrid between Versa-Lok courses, back far enough that the wall and a wedge of the hill act as one mass. The cheap version is block stacked on dirt with clay shoveled straight against the back.

Auburn has room for a machine, so excavation, spoil, and haul off price well here. We price the failing bays and the sound bays separately on a long run.
