Shawnee County is base, and Topeka is the county seat. From there the crew runs north into Jackson County, northeast into Jefferson County, south into Osage County, and west into Wabaunsee County. The Kaw cuts the middle of this city and the ground climbs off it on both banks. The wall work starts where that climb starts.
Inside Topeka the old platted neighborhoods hold the most walls. Potwin Place was laid out in the eighteen eighties with brick streets and Victorian houses, and it spent a decade as its own city before Topeka annexed it. College Hill grew from about 1880 around Washburn, built for the college's professors, and several hundred of its houses are counted as historic. Westboro came later, in the nineteen twenties, with big houses on central ground. Southwest of all three sits Burnett's Mound, the highest natural point in the city, with slopes that interstate grading cut into decades ago.
The ring towns are not one type of ground. Silver Lake sits northwest along the old Kansas River shore, and the river has since moved south, leaving river-bottom soil around town beside bluff-edge lots. Tecumseh lies east on the river and was the county's first seat. Auburn sits southwest at the Wakarusa headwaters, mixed terrain on the rural edge. Berryton lies southeast toward the airport on acreage ground. Keep driving west and the soil turns thin and cherty over Flint Hills limestone.
